Herpin'

Our good friends Les and Michelle have been staying with us while exploring Germany and we are all getting ready to head to Mallorca for the 4th of July! But while we've been here it’s been a blast, and very informative as Les and Michelle both are highly trained biologists and have been showing us ignorants some of the local flora and fauna especially the amphibians. We have been out at night and during our days searching with them (Herpin') and have found all sorts of frogs and toads and lizards. We found lots of Marsh Frogs (Pelophylax ridibundus), Natterjack Toads (Epidalea calamita), and a Sand Lizards (Lacerta agilis). I was hoping while they were here we would see the legless lizard we see all the time but have yet to come across one. Maybe we will tonight. We are also really excited to see what we will find in Mallorca.

While they have been here we also visited Weltenberg Monastery, which is the oldest monastery brewery in the world! We hiked from Kelheim, 3 miles through a pretty forest along the Donau to a ferry that takes you across the river to the abbey. We ate there, enjoyed some of the local suds and then took the ferry back down the Danube to Kelheim. On the way back, we passed all sorts of cliffs for climbing and beautiful sections of the river I'd like to go back and explore again. Other than that, they have visited Regensberg, Nurmeberg went climbing with us at Weissenstein (where they found their first lizard) and Kuhloch, and today are visiting Weiden before we ship off to Mallorca. Happy 4th of July!
